What does a stacked stone media wall need behind it?
Stacked stone brings depth and texture, and it is the heaviest common choice. The building code sets a weight ceiling for interior adhered veneer and a stiffness target for the wood holding it.
What does a typical build look like?
Interior stacked stone is normally adhered masonry veneer: units bonded to a prepared wall with mortar. The residential code section R703.12 points installers to the code, to TMS 602 or to the manufacturer’s instructions.
What framing and blocking does it need?
Stiff framing. The International Building Code says where interior adhered masonry veneer is supported by wood construction, the supporting members must be designed to limit deflection to 1/600 of their span.
| IBC 1404.11 point | Figure |
|---|---|
| Interior adhered masonry veneer, maximum weight | 20 psf (0.958 kN/m²) |
| Wood supports, deflection limit | span / 600 |
| Scratch coat (lath and mortar method) | nominal 1/2 in |
| Setting bed | 3/8 in or thicker |

What substrate goes behind it?
The veneer system’s required backing, often lath and a mortar scratch coat, applied as the manufacturer specifies.
How heavy is it?
Up to the 20 psf limit above for interior adhered veneer under the IBC. Real stone and manufactured stone differ; the product sheet gives the exact weight.
How does it behave in Florida humidity?
Stone itself shrugs off room humidity, but the wood framing behind it does not, which is why the deflection rule matters. See the moisture table on the wood page.
How is it finished and maintained?
Ledges catch dust; a soft brush and vacuum handle most of it. Sealing is product-specific.
What does it pair well with?
A simple floating shelf or a plain plaster panel next to the stone lets the texture lead. Grazing light from above exaggerates the shadow lines.
